The two semiconductor companies with plants in Sherman went recruiting one county over on Thursday, setting up tables at the Fannin County Career Fair in Bonham to find people for jobs in Sherman, KTEN reported.
GlobalWafers America and Texas Instruments were among more than two dozen employers at the fair, which Workforce Solutions Texoma put on with the Bonham Economic Development Corporation.
Who they want
In a written statement to the station, TI said the jobs it most wants to fill are equipment technician and process technician roles. The company said it will consider people with manufacturing backgrounds as well as career changers, and that it offers room to build skills and move up.
At GlobalWafers, human resources director Le An Powlison told KTEN the company has entry-level positions open to applicants with a high school diploma or a GED. The company also wants its workforce to come from nearby, said Stephanie Davidson, its community relations coordinator. "We want people who live here in the community," she said.
Aaron O'Brien was one of the job seekers who made the drive from Sherman. He told the station the chipmakers are always hiring and called them "the biggest kids on the block right now."
Deborah Hendley, managing director of Workforce Solutions Texoma, said in-person fairs still matter because so much of the job search has moved online. Meeting a recruiter face to face, she told KTEN, gives applicants a feel for what the workplace is like.
