Sherman has registered plans with the state for a new fleet services and public works building at 3501 E. King St., the next step in moving city vehicle maintenance out of a former car dealership.
The project was filed Nov. 2 with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which reviews public and commercial buildings for accessibility. The registration lists an estimated cost of $8 million, a construction start of Dec. 16 and completion on Jan. 10, 2028.
According to the filing, the building will be a pre-engineered metal structure of 25,681 square feet. Its scope includes vehicle repair bays, a tire bay, parts storage and a two-story office and staff support area, along with site work. The City of Sherman is listed as owner, and Hidell and Associates Architects of Carrollton is the design firm.
Why the city wants a new shop
City leaders have said for most of this year that the current service center is too cramped. In January, Mayor Shawn Teamann told KXII that the Rusk Street building, a car dealership before the city took it over decades ago, is not laid out so crews can work on fire trucks and trash trucks in indoor bays.
The city bought land in East Sherman near its solid waste center for a replacement.
In October, after the council approved a land transfer from Grayson County for the site, city spokesperson Nate Strauch told KTEN that Sherman maintains more than 500 vehicles and that the project is already funded through the 2024 bonds. He said then that the council would consider the construction step in November.
