A flute and clarinet duo with roots in Louisiana and a long run in the U.S. Army Band will play a free recital at Austin College this week.

Deux-Eaux, made up of clarinetist Mary Alice Druhan and flutist Rob Aughtry, performs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in Wynne Chapel on the Sherman campus. The college says the program will include music by Muczynski, Lees and Szalowski, among other composers. Admission is free and the public is invited.

The appearance is part of the Wright Fund Visiting Artists Series and is presented with the Austin College Music Department.

Who they are

The name is a Cajun spin on the word "duo." According to the college, Druhan and Aughtry started playing together in the Louisiana bayou country in the late 1990s and went on to hold seats at the same time with orchestras including the Baton Rouge Symphony and the Acadiana Symphony, along with the Natchez Opera and the Ohio Light Opera.

By 2000 both had joined The U.S. Army Band, known as "Pershing's Own," in Washington, D.C.

The pair also teach, and the college says their talks cover how to prepare for auditions, how to work as performing partners and how to build a career in music.

A talk the day before

Students and residents who want to meet the musicians before the concert can catch them on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the college's weekly Wind Down Wednesday, a public campus event. The duo will discuss their careers and preview the recital. The college's announcement did not list a time or room for the talk.

Leslie Whelan, an adjunct instructor in applied music, said in the college's announcement that Wright Fund performers are "exceptional talents" and that the free admission opens the campus to the wider community.

One note on the date: the opening line of the college's release calls the concert a Saturday event, but Oct. 8 falls on a Thursday, and a later paragraph of the same release says Thursday. Anyone planning to attend can confirm with the Austin College Music Department.
