Sherman High School has converted a former storage room into a working salon for its cosmetology program, giving students a space built to industry standards as they work toward a state license before graduation.
The room now holds 10 double-sided styling stations along with professional hair dryers, shampoo sinks and salon chairs, KXII reported this week. Twelve students are enrolled in the program this year.
A license by graduation
Students who stay with the program log 1,000 hours of practice in the school salon and then sit for written and practical exams. Those who pass leave with a full cosmetology license, which in Texas covers hair, nail, foot and facial services.
"With a cosmetology license, they can do nails, they can do feet, they can do hair, they can do facials," instructor Christy Jeffcoat told the station.
Students pay no tuition for the training. KXII noted that the same path through a private cosmetology school typically costs at least $15,000.
