GlobalWafers, the silicon wafer manufacturer with a plant in south Sherman, is putting $10,000 behind this fall's student robotics competition at Grayson College and plans to give the competing teams a tour of its facility, according to the college.

Grayson College announced the sponsorship on Friday, Oct. 2. The money supports the Viking BEST Robotics Hub that the college runs, covering its Fall 2026 season, which runs under this year's theme, "Byte to Bite."

According to the college, GlobalWafers will also give participants a tour of its facility as part of Game Day activities on Nov. 13 and 14, a chance for students to see semiconductor manufacturing and the jobs it offers in the region.

"GlobalWafers' support gives students an opportunity to take what they are learning and see how those skills translate into real careers in a growing industry," Grayson College President Jeremy McMillen said in the announcement.

The season calendar

The hub's 2026 season opened with a kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 19, in the auditorium of the college's Center for Workplace Learning. A practice day is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in the electrical engineering technology lab in the Career and Technology Center.

Game Day runs from 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Grayson College gymnasium at 4200 N. State Highway 91 in Denison.

Sherman schools did well at last year's event. The hub's 2025 results list Sherman High School among the final game standings with Bells, Sam Rayburn and White Oak high schools. Sherman ISD teams also won the awards for Most Elegant Robot and Spirit and Sportsmanship, and Piner Middle School took Best T-Shirt.

The company behind the gift

GlobalWafers America opened its 300-millimeter silicon wafer plant in Sherman in May 2025, the first U.S. facility of its kind in more than two decades, KXII reported at the time. At that opening, GlobalWafers Chairperson and CEO Doris Hsu announced the company intended to add $4 billion to its U.S. investment, bringing the total to $7.5 billion.
