The Grayson County Jail expansion in downtown Sherman has reached its last stretch of work, and county jail staff expect the new space to open in early November, KTEN reported Monday.

Crews broke ground on the addition nearly two years ago. When finished it will add more than 100 beds and a new kitchen, changes meant to ease crowding at the jail. An earlier KTEN report in July said the project also includes a new book-in and release area and a multipurpose room.

A two-step move

Opening the new wing is only the first phase. Capt. Jeremy Cox told the station that inmates now held in the older part of the jail will be moved into the new section once it is complete, and then the remodel of the older section will begin.

Until the expansion opens, some Grayson County inmates are being held in other counties' jails. KTEN reported that the county has renewed its contracts with neighboring county jail administrators to keep that arrangement going.

One of those agreements was on the Commissioners Court agenda Monday morning. The consent agenda listed a renewal of the interlocal agreement under which Cooke County houses and cares for Grayson County inmates as needed. The request came from the Sheriff's Office and was presented by Capt. Sarah Bigham.

From year-end to early November

In July, Bigham told KTEN that crews were running wire, installing electronics and starting to paint inside the building, and the project was expected to be done by the end of the year. Monday's report puts the opening in early November.

The jail sits in downtown Sherman, the county seat. The county has not announced a ribbon cutting or public tour date.
