Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge will mark its fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 10, with a day of bird walks, talks and live animal displays at the visitor center, 6465 Refuge Road.
The Friends of Hagerman, the volunteer group that runs the refuge's public programs, says there is no charge for admission, parking or any of the activities. A food truck will sell lunch, and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic instead.
The schedule
- 8 to 9:30 a.m.: Early bird walk, meeting in the parking lot. Registration is optional, and loaner binoculars are available.
- 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Christmas art glass sale in the visitor center.
- 10 to 11:15 a.m.: Dr. George Diggs Jr. speaks on climate change, drawing on his travels to all seven continents.
- 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.: Children's activities with Puddles at the pavilion; a "Skins and Skulls" table joins the afternoon session.
- 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Ice Hole food truck at the carport.
- 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Dr. Wayne Meyer on identifying North Texas sparrows by habitat, behavior and field marks.
- Noon to 12:30 p.m.: Storyteller Doris Haynie on the visitor center patio.
- 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.: A live snake display.
- 1 to 3 p.m.: Butterfly garden walk and monarch tagging.
- 2 to 3 p.m.: A live spider display.
Tram tours of the refuge leave at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. and require a reservation through the Friends group's website.
