Sherman is on pace to issue about 700 permits for new single-family homes this year, Mayor Shawn Teamann said Friday as he opened the city's fifth annual Mayor's Roundtable at Kidd-Key Auditorium.
The number stands out in a city that, by the mayor's account, grew by less than 1% a year for decades. "Right now, Sherman is growing at a rate that we've never experienced before," Teamann said, according to KTEN.
A billion-dollar bet on chips
The largest figure of the morning came from Coherent, one of Sherman's biggest employers. Beck Mason, an executive vice president with the company, told the audience the firm plans to spend more than $1.2 billion on new semiconductor fabrication infrastructure in Sherman, KTEN reported. He did not give a construction timeline in the remarks the station reported.
Streets, water and downtown
City staff walked attendees through updates on water system work, the street program and downtown development. Teamann said the infrastructure discussion was the part he looked forward to most, pointing in particular to the city's work on its streets.
The program also touched on new business. First Watch, a breakfast and brunch chain, is opening in the former Taco Cabana building on U.S. 75, according to KTEN.
