Painting is underway on the new water tank along West Shepherd Drive, and lights are next

Crews are painting the elevated tank, and the city plans light features so it doubles as a landmark at the city's entrance, KTEN reported Thursday. The tower was pitched in January as a $15 million, 2-million-gallon tank.

Sherman's newest water tower is starting to look finished. Crews are painting the elevated tank going up along West Shepherd Drive, and light features will be added once that work is done, KTEN reported Thursday.

When it is complete, the tank is meant to do more than hold water. The station reported that it will serve as a landmark at an entrance to the city, welcoming people as they arrive in Sherman. KTEN's report showed renderings of how the tank is expected to look in daylight and lit up at night.

Bigger storage for a growing south side

The project was outlined in January, when Mayor Shawn Teamann told KTEN the city would build a 2-million-gallon tank along Shepherd, across from the blue tower that stands over an industrial park. That older tank holds about 750,000 gallons, the mayor said then.

The station put the cost of the new tower at $15 million and reported at the time that construction would start in the summer and take about two years.

Teamann described the tank as a long-term piece of the water system, built to serve the city "for decades to come." He said it would add redundancy across the system as growth reaches both the industrial parks and new neighborhoods in the southern part of town.

Neither report gave a firm completion date, and the city has not posted a schedule for when the lights will be switched on.
