Sherman police officers and other first responders will spend Tuesday evening at Fairview Park for the city's National Night Out, a free gathering meant to let residents meet the people who answer their calls.
The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to KTEN, which previewed it in a segment with Sherman Police Lt. Sam Boyle. Families can expect activities and a chance to talk with local first responders, the station reported.
The department has been building up to the night with a little humor. KTEN reported Monday that Sherman police produced a mockumentary-style video to promote this year's event.
A proclamation first
Before the park gathering, the City Council has a National Night Out proclamation on its agenda for its regular meeting at 5 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 5, at City Hall, 220 W. Mulberry St. The draft proclamation, signed by Mayor Shawn Teamann, declares Oct. 6 as National Night Out in Sherman and asks residents to join the Sherman Police Department and the National Association of Town Watch in supporting the event.
According to the council's agenda packet, the proclamation carries no cost to the city. Staff described the campaign as a yearly effort to strengthen partnerships between police and the neighborhoods they serve.
