Austin Martin struck out to begin the ninth. Royce Lewis followed with a foul-tip strikeout. Victor Caratini swung at strike three to end it, giving Jacob Latz three strikeouts on 17 pitches and the Texas Rangers a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.
The Arlington club could hardly have asked for a tidier ending. Latz faced three hitters, allowed no hit and issued no walk. He did exactly what a reliever wants when the last three outs are his assignment. He also entered with a four-run lead, which means this was emphatically not a save situation. Good relief work does not require a save statistic to validate it.
The timing mattered because Minnesota had scored in the eighth. Tyler Alexander replaced Jakob Junis to start the bottom half and immediately gave up a triple to Luke Keaschall. Alexander struck out Brooks Lee, then Kody Clemens popped out in foul territory. Josh Bell’s single brought Keaschall home, and Walker Jenkins grounded out to finish the inning.
That sequence leaves Alexander with one inning, two hits and one earned run. The run belongs in the account. So does the restraint that followed the triple: Minnesota turned its extra-base hit into one run, not a larger inning. Texas’ lead moved from 6-1 to 6-2, leaving Latz the same four-run margin with which he finished.
The relief story had already been assembled in pieces. Robert Garcia entered in the fifth after Nathan Eovaldi departed with one out and runners at first and third. Garcia’s first batter was Keaschall, who grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Garcia then completed a scoreless sixth. His final line—1 2/3 innings, one hit and no walks—does not make the appearance flashy, but it captures the practical value: inherited traffic did not become inherited runs.
Jakob Junis handled the seventh and faced a different kind of problem. Alan Roden opened with a double. Royce Lewis then reached on a fielder’s choice that retired Roden at third, leaving a runner at first with one out.
Victor Caratini’s groundout advanced Lewis to second before Kaelen Culpepper lined out to end the inning. The inning contained a runner in scoring position, yet Minnesota never produced a run from it. That was the bridge Alexander was asked to continue.
Texas had been unable to add to the margin in the eighth against Taylor Rogers. Evan Carter’s leadoff single was followed by a strikeout and a lineout, and Carter was then caught stealing second. That gave the Twins an opening to narrow the score in the bottom half. Minnesota did score, but it still reached the ninth needing four runs simply to tie.
