Coherent has officially started construction on a $650 million expansion of its semiconductor manufacturing hub in Sherman, Texas. The project is designed to double the production area of the existing site and is expected to generate more than 1,000 new employment opportunities.
The development is situated on the grounds of a 700,000-square-foot facility that was originally built as a silicon wafer plant by Texas Instruments. Texas Instruments remains one of Sherman's largest employers. The property was later acquired by Finisar in 2017 and subsequently transferred to Coherent following the merger between II-VI and Finisar.
The expansion plan includes the construction of a new manufacturing structure. This new building will house advanced cleanroom capabilities and specialized wafer fabrication machinery. The project builds upon the infrastructure established by the previous owners to support Coherent's semiconductor operations.
While the headline figures for the investment and job creation are confirmed, further details regarding the specific timeline for completion or the exact breakdown of the new roles were not provided in the initial reports.
