Late surge defines victory

The Oakland Athletics ended their five-game losing streak by capitalizing on key moments in the final frames of their contest against the Houston Astros. The game, played at Daikin Park on Saturday, August 22, 2026, saw Oakland secure a 4-3 win despite trailing for much of the afternoon.

Early exchanges and home runs

Oakland took an early lead when Walton launched a 422-foot home run to center field in the third inning, making the score 1-0. Houston responded in the fourth inning as Diaz doubled to left field, allowing Walker to cross the plate and tie the game at 1-1.

The Astros regained the advantage in the seventh inning. Varsho hit a 358-foot home run to left to put Houston ahead 2-1. Shortly after, Peña singled to center field, driving in Wade Jr. to extend the lead to 3-1.

Pitching performances

Jacob Lopez started strong for Oakland, pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out nine batters. For Houston, Hunter Brown pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one earned run on seven hits but walking three batters.

The bullpen work proved critical in the eighth inning. Bennett Sousa entered for Houston and allowed three earned runs in 0.1 innings of work. Luis Medina came in to pitch a full inning for Oakland, taking the win with his performance.

Hogan Harris followed with a perfect inning, striking out one batter without allowing a hit or walk. Elvis Alvarado closed the game for Oakland, recording two strikeouts in his save.

For Houston, AJ Blubaugh pitched 1.1 innings without allowing a run, and Bryan Abreu finished with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two batters.

The decisive eighth inning

The momentum shifted dramatically in the bottom of the eighth inning for Oakland. With the score at 3-1, McNeil scored on a wild pitch by Sousa, bringing the Athletics within one run. McNeil scored again on a subsequent wild pitch, tying the game at 3-3.

Butler then singled to right field, scoring Gelof to give Oakland a 4-3 lead. Heim grounded out to shortstop, allowing Butler to score from third base, extending the lead to 5-3? No, the final score was 4-3. The scoring sequence shows Butler scored on Heim's groundout to make it 4-3.

The Athletics held on for the win, improving their record to 50-80. The Astros fell to 65-65. Attendance at Daikin Park was 31,009.
