A Quarter of Momentum

Houston Cougars quarterback Conner Weigman accounted for 239 passing yards in a 27-17 victory over the visiting UCF Knights on Saturday, October 3, at TDECU Stadium. The home team overcame a 17-0 deficit by the end of the first half to secure its fourth win of the season, improving its record to 4-1.

The Knights, now 3-2, had built a commanding lead early in the game but could not hold on against Houston’s second-half surge.

The first two quarters saw UCF dominate the scoreboard. Keyone Jenkins connected with Josh Derry on a 13-yard pass for a touchdown in the first period, and Will Stone added a 30-yard field goal in the second. Jenkins also rushed for a five-yard touchdown in the third quarter, extending UCF’s lead to 17-0 before Houston began its comeback. Attendance at TDECU Stadium was 25,593.

The Second-Half Surge

Houston’s offensive engine ignited in the third quarter, scoring 14 points to cut the deficit. Weigman first ran for a 19-yard touchdown, followed by a one-yard score on the next drive. The Cougars then took the lead in the fourth quarter when Weigman added another one-yard rushing touchdown.

Jonathan Dimas provided crucial support with two field goals, from 40 and 46 yards out, to close out the scoring and seal the 27-17 result.

Weigman’s performance was highlighted by his 18-of-33 passing efficiency, leading to 239 yards. Re’Sahn Sanford II contributed on the ground with 62 rushing yards on 18 carries, while Patrick Overmyer led the receiving corps with 76 yards on six catches. The Cougars’ balanced attack was the key to outscoring UCF in the final two quarters, 27-10.

UCF’s Resilience

Despite the loss, UCF’s offense showed signs of life. Keyone Jenkins passed for 253 yards on 23-of-35 attempts, including one touchdown and one interception. Josh Derry was a primary target, catching seven passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Duke Watson added 50 rushing yards on nine carries. The Knights led 17-0 after three quarters but were unable to generate a fourth-quarter score, allowing Houston to complete its comeback.

The final score of 27-17 reflects Houston’s ability to adjust in the second half. With the Cougars now 4-1 and the Knights 3-2, the game showcased the volatility of the season, with both teams displaying strong offensive capabilities but differing levels of late-game execution. The result stands as a testament to Houston’s resilience at TDECU Stadium.
