The Boys & Girls Club of Sherman marked six decades of service to local youth with a Saturday celebration that drew former members, families, and supporters. The event included barbecue, games, and live music, providing a gathering point for those who have been part of the organization's history.
Kyle Crick, a former member who went on to play professional baseball, returned for the occasion. He described the club as a place where he and his brother developed team chemistry and learned to look out for one another. Crick noted that these lessons were not fully appreciated during childhood but have proven significant in his adult life.
Currently, the organization supports more than 500 children through summer and after-school programs. These services include academic assistance, meals, recreation, and mentorship. Sherman Mayor Shawn Teamann highlighted the long-term influence of these programs, stating that the club creates a ripple effect that shapes the future of the children it serves.
As the city continues to expand, the club is addressing the need to accommodate more students. CEO Mark Ellison indicated that the organization aims to serve an additional 200 to 300 children within the next two to three years, which would bring the total to approximately 800. Ellison stated that the current facility cannot house that number of participants.
