Gov. Greg Abbott stopped in Sherman to present a statewide agenda centered on reducing the cost of living. The visit included a meeting with local officials and residents at MG's Restaurant, where the governor detailed specific policy proposals.
A central component of the plan involves eliminating the school district portion of property taxes for homeowners. Abbott stated that this change, combined with other tax adjustments, would result in annual savings exceeding $3,000 for the average Texas homeowner. He noted that removing the school district levy would cut the overall property tax bill by more than half for most residents.
The agenda also addresses higher education and health care. Proposed measures include summer tuition discounts and accelerated bachelor's degree programs. Additionally, the plan includes changes aimed at lowering health care costs and providing insurance discounts.
Discussion during the visit also covered the rapid development of data centers in the region. Abbott emphasized that local communities should have the authority to decide whether such facilities are built in their areas, particularly given the increased demand for water and electricity.
