Texas Instruments has launched a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Sherman, marking a significant expansion of its production capabilities. The company, which is headquartered in Dallas, opened the site in December. While the public often associates the brand with graphing calculators, semiconductor chips represent the largest source of revenue for the corporation.
These components serve as the processing units for a wide range of electronic devices, including automobiles, smartphones, and laptops.
The initial factory, designated as SM1, is currently in production. It specializes in manufacturing large 300mm wafers. These wafers are then transported to other company locations where they are processed into individual chips. Following this stage, the chips undergo testing and packaging before being distributed to clients. Notable customers for these components include Apple, Ford, Nvidia, and SpaceX.
Kevin Gable, a process engineering branch manager at Texas Instruments, noted that semiconductors have played a transformative role in daily life since the 1990s. He explained that the chips are designed to process electronic signals and direct specific outcomes, such as powering on a computer or starting a car engine.
Gable emphasized the high level of control and precision required to build these devices, stating that the complexity is difficult to articulate but is a central part of the work performed at the site.
