Three downtown business owners have launched a recurring Friday night event called the Moonlight Market, which features live music, drinks, and local vendors. The initiative aims to draw shoppers to the area during evening hours when foot traffic is typically lower.
The Texas Department of Transportation approved the closure of Crockett Street between South Elm Street from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Market Fridays. This approval addresses safety concerns raised by organizers who wanted attendees to enjoy the event without navigating vehicle traffic.
While the city does not have authority to close Houston Street, which is part of State Highway 56, business owners requested the closure and worked with the city for a month to secure TxDOT permission. Sherman Communications Manager Nate Strauch noted that the city council encouraged organizers to pursue this approval after previous events drew larger crowds than anticipated.
Two police officers will be on site during the event to manage traffic control. Organizers stated they did not expect the high turnout seen in earlier spring and fall markets, which required adjustments to accommodate more visitors.
Lisa Rutledge, who owns Rutledge Ryan Ranch with her husband, said the event has received support from the city council, the Main Street office, and other downtown businesses. This Friday’s market features a Western theme, including line dancing lessons in front of the courthouse and a kids zone with a bounce house and lawn games.
