The Whitewright Sun newspaper collection has been formally added to the Portal to Texas History digital archive. This addition makes the historical records of the local publication accessible to researchers and the public through the University of North Texas Libraries system.
The Whitewright Sun publishing office holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating business in Whitewright, Texas. The establishment recently marked its 136th year of operation in 2020. In addition to serving the residents of Whitewright, the publication serves as the official newspaper of record for both the Whitewright Independent School District and the City of Tom Bean.
The digitization of the newspaper holdings was made possible through financial support from a grant awarded to the Whitewright Public Library by the Tocker Foundation. The grant facilitated the partnership required to bring the physical archives into the digital realm.
The collection currently contains 4,665 items. These records span twelve decades of publication history. The materials are available in a single language and represent one specific title. The archive is located in one county within one state and one country.
The digital collection has seen significant engagement since its creation. The Portal to Texas History recorded 58,833 uses of the collection. The archive was originally created five years and seven months ago. The most recent update to the digital holdings occurred one week and four days ago.
The University of North Texas Libraries manages the portal. The institution lists two partners in the project. The collection is cited as "Whitewright Sun in The Portal to Texas History" by the University of North Texas Libraries.
