SpaceX is set to establish a semiconductor plant in Grimes County, with initial state estimates exceeding $16.8 billion and the promise of 3,000 jobs. The project, named Terafab, was announced by Governor Greg Abbott and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
The facility will span 100 million square feet, making it one of the largest manufacturing plants globally. It is designed to integrate chip design, logic, memory, and advanced packaging in one location, a departure from the traditional model that relies on multiple suppliers.
The chips produced will support Tesla's Optimus robots and Cybercab vehicles, as well as processors for SpaceX's satellite data centers. Governor Abbott highlighted the project's potential to enhance chip production in Texas significantly, while Musk emphasized its role in advancing American manufacturing.
However, there is a notable discrepancy between the state's announced investment figure and SpaceX's own filing. While the state cites an investment of over $16.8 billion for the first phase, SpaceX's May filing suggested an initial investment of $55 billion, potentially rising to $119 billion. The difference in figures has not been clarified by either party.
In addition, the state has provided a $30 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund, and both local school districts have approved agreements related to the project, which is expected to have a substantial impact on the region's workforce and economy.
