University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks appeared in court Monday in two criminal cases. One alleges an assault involving a pregnant person, and Nariah Harley asked the judge to have that charge dismissed. She said police misunderstood what happened and told the court she does not consider herself a victim.
Harley said an argument occurred last week at Brooks’ apartment. After he asked her to go, she said he lifted her and set her outside when she declined. She also said Brooks called police because she would not leave.
Harley identified Brooks as the father of her baby and asked that all charges be dropped so they could move on. Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body-camera recordings captured the encounter. Prosecutors are expected to review that material along with a 911 call Brooks made.
The other charge is criminal mischief tied to an August dispute in northwest Harris County. Brooks is accused of damaging a door handle during a conflict involving another woman and her sister. Family members said those women and Brooks attended the same high school after growing up in Killeen.
Harley is also from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University. Wasserstein said Brooks is suspended from the football team as the cases proceed and hopes he can attend classes. No additional case details were provided.
