A defense attorney representing Jacob Fields, a former TCU football player, claims that the coaching staff was aware of rising tensions during practice before a locker room fight occurred on August 13. Fields faces an aggravated assault charge for allegedly injuring teammate Dozie Ezukanma, who required hospitalization for three days due to a brain bleed.

Attorney Coby DuBose contests the arrest warrant affidavit's assertion that Fields sucker-punched Ezukanma, stating instead that Fields approached Ezukanma to greet him prior to the altercation. DuBose emphasized that Fields had informed the coaching staff about his frustrations with rough treatment in practices, asserting that he had expressed being tired of receiving cheap shots.

DuBose argues that the TCU coaching staff did not take the situation seriously and could have acted to avert the fight. He described the events leading up to the incident as exceeding typical football roughness, citing examples of being spat on and illegal hits. Phillip “Red” Miller, Fields’ agent, echoed these sentiments, noting the presence of unnecessary aggression during practices.

In response, a source within the TCU football program disputed the claims made by DuBose and Miller, while athletic director Mike Buddie remarked that the coaching staff handled the situation appropriately. Details about the ongoing investigation and the actions of the coaching staff remain unclear as it unfolds.
