The 2026 college football season will begin with a matchup between the TCU Horned Frogs and the North Carolina Tar Heels in Dublin, Ireland. The game is scheduled for Saturday at noon EDT at Aviva Stadium and will be broadcast on ESPN.

TCU enters the contest as 9.5-point favorites, having achieved a 9-4 record in the past two seasons, both ending with bowl victories. Under the leadership of head coach Sonny Dykes, the Horned Frogs have a 36-17 record over five seasons, highlighted by a run to the national championship game in his first year.

On the other hand, North Carolina is looking to bounce back from a challenging 4-8 season in 2025-26. Coach Bill Belichick acknowledged the difficulties in preparing for the opening game, stating, "There are unknowns on our team, there are unknowns on our opponents," emphasizing that the real test will come during the game.

In addition to the TCU-North Carolina game, the opening weekend features several other notable matchups, including USC hosting San Jose State and N.C. State facing Virginia. The majority of FBS season openers are set for the following week, with numerous games scheduled from Thursday through September 7.
