The Dallas Cowboys have made notable changes to their roster, leading to the release of cornerback Josh Butler, who spent three seasons with the team. Butler, who had previously played in two spring football leagues before joining the Cowboys in 2023, shared his disappointment and pride following the announcement.
In a social media post, Butler reflected on his time with the Cowboys, stating that he never allowed a touchdown in either preseason or regular season play, nor did he give up a pass over 20 yards. He emphasized his gratitude for the team after returning to football following a four-year hiatus.
During the preseason, Butler recorded six tackles and demonstrated his defensive skills in three games. Over his three seasons, he participated in six games overall, achieving 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack. However, an ACL injury in 2024 sidelined him for the entire 2023 season, limiting his participation in 2025.
Despite his solid performances, Butler faced tough competition at the cornerback position, which contributed to his release. The Cowboys have not dismissed the idea of bringing him back for their practice squad, recognizing his reliability as a depth player.
As the team continues to assess its roster, it remains unclear whether Butler will join another NFL team or return to the Cowboys in a different role.
