Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed, a concussion, and other injuries following an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields in the locker room. The incident took place on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Fields reportedly punched Ezukanma in the head while he was sitting and looking at his phone, then kicked him in the back of the head, causing Ezukanma to lose consciousness. After experiencing severe headaches and ringing in his ears, Ezukanma was taken to the hospital, where scans confirmed a brain bleed and led to his transfer to the ICU.
Ezukanma was discharged on August 16, having also sustained a strained AC joint in his shoulder. Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18, turned himself in to authorities, and was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was released from jail on a $50,000 bond.
Following the incident, Fields expressed remorse in a text message to TCU police, stating he made an emotional decision and offered to cover Ezukanma's hospital bills. TCU head coach Sonny Dykes commented on the situation, noting it was out of character for both the team and Fields.
Ezukanma, a graduate of Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was expected to be a starting wide receiver for the upcoming season, with the next game scheduled against Grambling on September 12.
