The Cowboys have lost Malik Davis for the season after he injured his hip during Friday practice and later underwent surgery. The team placed him on injured reserve with a season-ending designation after he was taken off the field by cart.

The workout was held outdoors at The Star in Frisco. It was a non-contact session that was only marginally beyond a walk-through. Davis had won the No. 2 running back spot behind Javonte Williams after competing for it through most of August.

His training-camp and preseason performances had led the team to expect a role for him in its offensive plans against the Giants on Sunday.

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ chief operating officer, said on 105.3 The Fan that the injury was disappointing for Davis and the team. Jones said Davis had worked his way into the backup position and that other players would have to take on the work. Dallas signed veteran Emari Demercado for backfield depth and special-teams help.

Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, also could get more opportunities. The Cowboys could elevate Abanikanda for the game or place him on the active roster.

Davis backed up Williams last season, gaining 252 yards and scoring two touchdowns. The undrafted free agent joined Dallas in 2022, appeared in 12 games as a rookie and rushed for 161 yards. He then spent two seasons on the practice squad before returning at last year’s training camp, making the roster and recording 103 yards in his only career game above 100 yards.
