Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Marist Liufau is scheduled for surgery on a fractured forearm and is anticipated to be sidelined for several weeks, according to head coach Brian Schottenheimer. The injury occurred during a preseason matchup against the New Orleans Saints while Liufau was tackling an opponent in the first quarter.
Schottenheimer commended Liufau's competitive nature, stating, "What a great competitor. He'll be back." Liufau, who was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing at Notre Dame, has participated in every game for the Cowboys over the last two seasons.
As he enters his third year, Liufau has shifted from inside linebacker to outside linebacker under defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He has expressed appreciation for the backing he has received from teammates and coaches during this transition. Last season, he significantly increased his involvement in special teams, playing 75% of the snaps compared to 35% in his rookie season.
Liufau understands the importance of special teams in securing a roster spot, emphasizing teamwork over individual pride.
Schottenheimer noted the impact of losing Liufau, particularly in special teams, stating, "Losing Marist as a football player is tough. Unfortunately, it's part of the business." The team plans to proceed with surgery quickly and adapt to the situation, as Liufau plays a vital role in all four special teams phases.
