SMU senior Enzo Panozzo has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s co-defensive player of the week following the Mustangs’ 1-0 home victory over NC State, SMU Athletics reported. The conference announced the selection Tuesday, with Panozzo sharing it with Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, led SMU’s defense as captain and scored the only goal of the match. NC State managed eight shots, and just two were on goal. The result gave SMU its fifth shutout this season.
It was Panozzo’s first weekly honor from the ACC and SMU’s second conference weekly award this season. The Mustangs moved to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll after the win. SMU is 7-0-1 overall, including a 2-0-0 mark in ACC play, and is scheduled to return to conference competition Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
