The Dallas Cowboys signed running back Israel Abanikanda from their practice squad after Malik Davis suffered a hip injury requiring surgery. Abanikanda is expected to be the team’s third running back. Davis had been behind Javonte Williams during training camp while competing with Jaydon Blue, whom Dallas waived after the preseason.
The Cowboys then claimed Emari Demercado from Kansas City, and Demercado is set to back up Williams against the New York Giants. Fullback Hunter Luepke also remains on the roster.
The Dallas-New York game has an over-under of 48.5 points. Nick Harris selected Dallas to win and projected the score to stay under that mark, pointing to the Cowboys’ experience, the opening week and possible weather. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will relay much of the defensive communication through the helmet, though other players are prepared if defensive packages require a change.
Dallas is also evaluating its offensive-line choices. Veteran tackle D.J. Humphries became available after Washington released him. Arizona drafted Humphries 24th overall in 2015, and he became a full-time starter in 2016 before injuries affected his time with the Cardinals through 2023.
A report on receiver Ryan Flournoy’s contract said it has a $1.5 million base salary, a $500,000 roster bonus and $1.25 million in remaining signing-bonus proration. Trading him before the roster bonus is paid could save Dallas about $2 million against the salary cap, while a strong 2026 season could raise his trade value. George Pickens is playing under the franchise tag.
