Last year, under former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys faced challenges, finishing last in the NFL for opponent passing yards and points allowed. They were also 30th in total yards allowed and tied for 22nd in sacks. This contrasts with their previous success under Dan Quinn, who has since taken a coaching role with the Washington Commanders.
With Christian Parker now at the helm as the new defensive coordinator, the Cowboys have adopted a fresh mindset and strategy. Williams highlighted the importance of daily practices against a strong offense in fostering their defensive growth. He expressed optimism about their journey from the start of OTAs to their current state, while also recognizing the need for further refinement.
In August, the Cowboys secured Williams with a three-year, $105.9 million contract extension, positioning him among the league's highest-paid interior defensive linemen. Last season, he achieved 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception, and 53 combined tackles over 15 games.
The team has also strengthened its defense through strategic signings, including safety Jalen Thompson and cornerback Cobie Durant, alongside veteran linebacker Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. In the 2026 NFL Draft, they added safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Malachi Lawrence to enhance their lineup.
