A Late Surge Decides the Battle
The No. 19 Texas Longhorns survived a significant second-half collapse to defeat the No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels 34-27 on Saturday, October 24, at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. The decisive factor in the 104,306-attendance contest was the offensive production of quarterback Arch Manning, who threw for 212 yards on 18-of-30 passing before adding a rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Despite blowing a 21-point lead, Texas held on to improve its record to 5-2, while Ole Miss also remains 5-2 on the season.
Early Dominance and the Deficit
The game began with a defensive struggle that quickly turned into a Texas offensive showcase. In the first quarter, Gianni Spetic kicked a 23-yard field goal to give Ole Miss a 3-0 lead, but Lucas Carneiro responded with a 46-yard kick to tie the score. Manning then struck with a two-yard rushing touchdown, extending the lead to 10-3.
The momentum shifted decisively in the second quarter. Manning connected with Ryan Wingo for a 50-yard touchdown pass, and Michael Terry III added a two-yard run to put Texas up 24-3. That 21-point cushion proved to be the high water mark for the Longhorns, as they were shut out entirely in the third quarter.
Ole Miss' Third-Quarter Surge
Ole Miss erased the deficit in the third period, scoring 14 unanswered points. Kam Franklin recovered a fumble for a touchdown, and Trinidad Chambliss found Horatio Fields for a six-yard score. Chambliss finished with 250 passing yards on 25-of-52 completion, though he also threw three interceptions.
