As the new school year approaches, Allen shoppers will have the opportunity to take advantage of Texas' annual tax-free weekend from August 7 through August 9, 2026. During this period, many essential back-to-school items will be exempt from state and local sales tax, which can total up to 8.25 percent.

Eligible items include most clothing and footwear priced under $100 per item, as well as student backpacks, with a limit of 10 per purchase. A specific list of school supplies priced under $100 each also qualifies for the exemption. This tax relief applies to purchases made in Texas stores and online from Texas-based sellers.

However, items such as jewelry, handbags, watches, computers, and athletic or protective footwear do not qualify. Additionally, services like rentals, alterations, or cleaning are excluded from the tax exemption. Shoppers will not need any coupons or exemption certificates, as the discount will be applied automatically at checkout on qualifying items.

More details can be found on the Texas Comptroller's website.
