The Sherman Symphony Orchestra starts its 61st season Saturday, Oct. 17, with a 7:30 p.m. concert at Kidd-Key Auditorium, 400 N. Elm St.
The program pairs Antonin Dvorak's "In Nature's Realm" with Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade," according to an announcement from Austin College. Tickets are $20 for adults. Students attend free. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's website, shermansymphony.org.
Bring a pencil
The orchestra is trying something new at this concert, which it calls "Sketch the Symphony." Program books will include blank pages, drawing supplies will be handed out, and people are welcome to bring sketchbooks of their own.
"This is a casual, from-your-seat activity that we hope will augment the experience," said Leslie Whelan, the orchestra's executive director, who also teaches applied music at Austin College.
Who plays
Austin College music professor Cecil Isaac founded the ensemble. Dan Dominick, who chairs the college's music department, has conducted it since 1992. The college describes the group as a professional regional orchestra with players drawn from across North Texas, and says it has also served as a training ground for advanced young musicians.
Bill and Janet Douglass are sponsoring the 2026-27 season. Goodwill Industries of Northeast Texas is sponsoring Saturday's concert.
