Some current and former Sherman ISD employees had their Social Security numbers, birth dates and driver's license numbers exposed in a data breach at one of the district's software vendors, the district said Tuesday.

The vendor is Frontline Education, which Sherman ISD uses for its finance and human resources work. In a notice posted to its website Oct. 27, the district said an unauthorized party got into Frontline's systems in August and that the incident touched school employees across the country, not only in Sherman.

Frontline told the district on Oct. 16 which data was involved, according to the notice. The district stressed that the intrusion happened inside the vendor's systems, that Sherman ISD's own network was not breached and that nothing its employees did caused it. Frontline has said it knows of no misuse of the stolen information, the district said.

What was taken

For the affected Sherman ISD employees, the files included full names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and driver's license numbers. The district did not say how many people are affected; its notice says "several" current and former employees were in the files, and that the exact details vary from person to person.

Anyone who gets a notice from the district or from Frontline was included, the district said.

What employees can do

Frontline is mailing letters to the people affected that offer two years of credit monitoring and identity protection through TransUnion at no cost. The district is urging employees to watch for the letter and follow its enrollment steps.

The district also suggested that employees:

  • consider placing a free credit freeze or fraud alert with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion;
  • check bank statements and pull free credit reports at annualcreditreport.com;
  • report suspected identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov.

Neither the district nor Frontline will call, text or email to ask for a Social Security number or bank information, the notice says, so any message that does should be treated as a scam.

According to the district, Frontline brought in an outside cybersecurity firm to investigate, closed the vulnerability, notified law enforcement and added other security measures. Sherman ISD said it is working with the company to notify the people affected.

Questions about the breach or the credit monitoring go to TransUnion at 833-516-8792, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central, Monday through Friday. District-specific questions go to the Sherman ISD Technology Helpdesk at 903-891-8324.
