Ken Paxton, the Republican running for U.S. Senate, used a Sunday evening appearance in Sherman, at Schulman's Movie Bowl Grille, to promote the tax proposals at the center of his campaign, KXII reported.

The Oct. 25 event was the 18th stop on a statewide tour Paxton, the Texas attorney general, began Oct. 17, according to the station. Among those present were state Reps. Shelley Luther and David Spiller and Don Huffines, the Republican candidate for comptroller. KXII did not report a crowd size.

The proposals

Paxton walked through his "Protecting the Texas Promise" agenda, which he said is meant to make living in Texas more affordable. He told the audience that as a senator he would pursue a $25,000 deduction for medical costs, a $50,000 deduction for people buying a home and a new deduction for "healthy living" costs, KXII reported.

"It would also double the child tax credit, because it costs a lot of money to have kids, and it's gotten more expensive," Paxton said, according to the station. He added that he wants to make the federal "Trump accounts" permanent.

When Paxton released the plan in July, The Texas Tribune reported that the healthy living deduction would be $5,000 and would cover expenses such as gym memberships and nutrition plans. Doubling the child tax credit would raise its maximum from $2,200 to $4,400 per child, the Tribune reported.

Paxton also spoke about his Democratic opponent, state Rep. James Talarico of Austin. "His rhetoric doesn't match his current record," Paxton said, adding that Talarico has shifted his positions toward Paxton's own, KXII reported.

Two attendees who spoke to the station said they back the Republican ticket and see the tax proposals as relevant to them.

The other candidates

Talarico's economic plan also calls for expanding the child tax credit, according to the Tribune. Beyond that, he has proposed higher taxes on billionaires and on corporations, an end to loopholes that favor them and a larger low-income housing credit. In a Tribune candidate questionnaire this month, Talarico said he would suspend the federal gas tax.

Libertarian Ted Brown is also on the ballot. In the same questionnaire, Brown said he favors eliminating the federal gas tax altogether, writing that Americans pay "way too many taxes."

Early voting continues through Friday, Oct. 30. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
