The rapid expansion of data centers in Texas, particularly in North Texas, is driving a significant demand for electricians and HVAC technicians. With at least 248 data centers planned statewide, 86 of which are in North Texas, the region is becoming a key player in the artificial intelligence sector. This surge is creating challenges due to a shortage of skilled labor needed for installation and maintenance.

The Texas Workforce Commission has indicated that the Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central workforce areas will require nearly 3,000 more electricians by 2032, representing a 15% increase compared to staffing levels in 2026. In the Dallas region specifically, approximately 1,035 electrician positions are expected to open annually, largely due to retirements and workforce turnover.

The labor shortage is not limited to Texas; nationwide estimates suggest a need for up to 499,000 additional workers in data-center construction. As demand for HVAC specialists and other technicians rises, wages have also increased, with data-center workers earning about a third more than those in typical construction roles. This labor gap has been developing over years, as an aging workforce retires without enough younger workers entering the field.

For young individuals in North Texas, this shortage presents opportunities in trade programs and apprenticeships, allowing them to earn while they learn without incurring student debt. The ongoing data-center boom has made careers in electrical and HVAC work increasingly attractive, contingent on the successful completion of these projects.

Dallas is about 60 miles south of Sherman.
