The Bells softball team starts the second half of their season tonight in Edmonton, Alberta, as they face the RiverHawks in a three-game series. Bells is about 12 miles east of Sherman. The team is competing for one of the remaining three playoff spots in the North Division after finishing tied for first place but missing a guaranteed berth due to a head-to-head tiebreaker loss to Wenatchee. The Bells are taking on a RiverHawks squad that has won four consecutive games. First pitch for the opener is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. local time. The team will return home one week from the start of this series.

In international sports news, Team USA is set to play Bosnia-Herzegovina in the first knockout round of the World Cup. The match takes place at 5 p.m. at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the same venue where the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl earlier this year. A victory advances the United States to the Round of 16, with a potential next-round game in Seattle scheduled for the following Monday. A loss would eliminate the team from the tournament.

Local fans in Bellingham can attend an official Fan Zone watch party at the Kulshan Trackside Beer Garden. The event features a doubleheader, beginning with the Belgium versus Senegal match in Seattle at 1 p.m., followed by the US game. Western Transit Authority (WTA) is providing additional bus service between downtown Bellingham and the waterfront from noon until 8 p.m. to support attendees.

In other regional sports updates, the Seattle Mariners are preparing for Game 2 against the Los Angeles Angels. The Mariners won the series opener 6-2, driven by two home runs from Cole Young and strong pitching from George Kirby, who earned his seventh win of the season. Seattle’s record is now 43-43, placing them half a game behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West. Bryan Woo will pitch for Seattle against Angels starter Jose Soriano. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m., with coverage on KPUG.

The Bellingham Seahawks are also in the news as the first round of bids for the franchise is due today. Bloomberg reports the sale could be the largest in NFL history, potentially surpassing the Washington Commanders’ $6 billion sale in 2023. Reported bidders include groups led by Wyc Grousbeck, Vinod Khosla, and Todd Boehly.

On the national level, the Supreme Court has issued a ruling regarding transgender females in sports. In NBA news, LeBron James plans to return for his 24th season but will not remain with the Los Angeles Lakers. Kawhi Leonard is returning to the Toronto Raptors in a trade involving Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and two first-round picks.
