The new multipurpose stadium at Sherman High School is prepared for its first home game, marking the end of a two-and-a-half-year construction period. The 8,000-seat facility replaces the previous venue, which had served as the school's home for 85 years. The public will have the opportunity to view the new structure on September 12, ahead of the first scheduled home game on September 18.
Sherman ISD Athletic Director Alan McDougal acknowledged the difficulty of transitioning from the long-standing previous stadium. "Bearcat Stadium is going to be kind of impossible to replace," McDougal said. "We're not trying to replace it; it's just a different place for us to call home."
The new facility offers expanded space for student performers. The high school band has increased from approximately 130 to more than 200 members, a growth that made performances in the older venue feel cramped. Band Director Ryan Jenkins noted that the additional room allows students to perform without concern for nearby individuals.
"Just having the space to be ourselves and do things the way we want… it's a freeing feeling, for sure," Jenkins said. He added that previous routines were often restricted by safety concerns regarding proximity to others.
The new stadium also introduces a video board designed to enhance the game day experience for athletes, performers, and fans. McDougal stated that this feature adds an element that was not present at the previous location. "It's just going be something that's going to add to more of the game day experience that we didn't really have at Bearcat Stadium," he said.
