A Texoma entrepreneur is pursuing municipal authorization to establish a poker lounge in the heart of Sherman. Bill Hollomon, a sales professional and co-owner of The Railyard Taproom, recently outlined his proposal to city officials. He stated that the reception from local leaders has been largely positive.
Hollomon argued that the proposed venue would address a local demand. He described the project as filling a gap for Grayson County and the surrounding region. According to Hollomon, the feedback from city representatives has been overwhelmingly favorable.
While Texas statutes generally prohibit gambling and casino-style operations, Hollomon pointed to specific state exceptions that permit poker lounges. He outlined three conditions necessary for compliance: ensuring equal winning odds for all participants, maintaining the venue as a private club, and prohibiting the house from taking a rake. He emphasized that all funds wagered would return to the players, with none retained by the establishment.
The proposed business, named Showdown Social Club, would feature between 20 and 30 tables, accommodating several hundred patrons. Operating hours would extend from noon until 2:00 a.m. Hollomon described the interior design as western-themed, blending modern and rustic elements. He characterized the space as upscale yet traditional.
Hollomon noted that Sherman is developing into a tech hub and that the downtown square is becoming a high-energy district. He expressed hope that the poker lounge would contribute to that vibrant atmosphere. The entrepreneur is currently awaiting final authorization from city leaders before proceeding with the project. His objective is to open the doors before the end of the year.
