Daytime flights have resumed at the Sherman Municipal Airport, concluding a multi-month closure for a significant infrastructure upgrade. The airfield, which has served the city’s south side since 1929, shut down in April to allow crews to repave and revamp its aging runway.
The project cost nearly $4 million, with the majority of the funding provided through a Texas Department of Transportation aviation grant. The work was finished ahead of the original timeline, which had targeted mid-September for completion. By the end of August, the newly resurfaced runway was ready to accept aircraft.
Sherman Communications Manager Nate Strauch noted that the closure placed pressure on pilots who maintain full-time operations at the facility. He reported receiving positive feedback from the aviation community regarding the reopening. Strauch described the low cost for a complete resurfacing and related ancillary work as a significant benefit for the municipality.
While daytime traffic is now active, the project is not yet fully complete. Crews are currently installing upgraded runway lighting to support safe night operations. According to Strauch, remaining electrical work is expected to finish next week, at which point the airfield will be open for both day and night flights.
