Sherman couple dresses as founding figures for America 250 celebration

Retired Air Force veterans Mark and Nancy Thomson brought historical figures to life at a First United Bank location in Sherman to mark the United States 250th anniversary. The event took place as the community approached the Fourth of July holiday.

Mark Thomson, dressed as Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, spoke to the group about the difficulties faced by delegates in the 1700s. He described the challenges of declaring independence from Great Britain and uniting the thirteen colonies. He emphasized that patriotism is essential for keeping the country together.

Nancy Thomson appeared in costume as Betsy Ross, the upholsterer and flag-maker. She discussed the origins of the American flag as a symbol of unity. She noted that the American way of life serves as an example for other nations, particularly those visiting the United States for the first time.

The couple expressed their belief in the importance of understanding the nation's origins. They highlighted the progress made over centuries and the freedoms maintained by courageous leaders who sought independence. Mark Thomson stated that the Declaration of Independence reveals the qualities of the country's forefathers.
