Baylor University's football defense is preparing for major changes as Joe Klanderman steps in as the new coordinator. Previously, Klanderman led a top 30 ranked defense at Kansas State, and Baylor's recent struggles—allowing an average of 30.8 points and over 399.9 yards per game since 2023—have prompted this shift.
Klanderman's strategy employs a 3-3-5 formation, designed to enhance versatility and confuse opposing quarterbacks. This setup includes three defensive linemen to absorb blocks, allowing linebackers to pursue the ball more effectively. The new scheme aims to improve critical aspects of defense, especially in red-zone situations and third-down stops, areas where Klanderman's previous teams excelled.
The defensive line has been significantly revamped with new talent, including Indiana transfer Hosea Wheeler, alongside Garrick Ponder, Jordan Mack, and Jamaal Whyce Jr. This new lineup is expected to increase pressure on quarterbacks and strengthen run defense.
Additionally, the secondary will feature a mix of experienced players and new transfers, including LeVar Thorton and Jacob Redding, to limit explosive plays against powerful Big 12 offenses.
