Texas Tech's quarterback plan remains unsettled after two games, with Tommy Castellanos appearing in selected situations alongside starter Will Hammond. Castellanos has accounted for three touchdowns this season, including a 3-yard rushing score against Houston last Friday.
His Houston appearance also included a turnover. Castellanos threw an interception on his first play while trying to throw the ball away, according to Red Raiders Wire. He later came back into the game near the goal line and reached the end zone on the run.
Coach Joey McGuire said Hammond remains the Red Raiders' starting quarterback while indicating that Texas Tech will keep using packages designed for Castellanos. Castellanos joined the team late in preseason camp as an emergency backup, after the transfer portal closed and Brendan Sorsby's situation concluded. Hammond continues to recover from a torn ACL, according to the report.
Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos' role among 10 questions that could influence the college football season. Texas Tech has not determined how it will use Castellanos in the future, including whether he will continue appearing in goal-line situations.
