Head Coach Neal Brown has raised alarms about the North Texas Mean Green offensive line as preparations for the 2026 season begin. Following a recent practice, Brown remarked on their current performance, indicating they are far from meeting the team's expectations. During the successful 2025 season, the offensive line was pivotal, helping the team achieve the highest number of rushing touchdowns in the nation at 49 and earning the title of top-scoring offense. Key contributors included offensive guard Gabe Blair, recognized as a First Team All-American Conference selection and ranked third among guards by Pro Football Focus.
With all five starting offensive linemen from last season having departed, the team faces the challenge of rebuilding this crucial unit. Brown mentioned that only two players, senior Johnny Williams IV and fifth-year Chandler Strong, have stood out in fall camp, with Strong being highlighted as the top performer.
He emphasized the necessity of assembling a strong lineup, noting that the team cannot succeed with just two offensive linemen. All positions on the line are open for competition as the coaching staff aims to create a dominant group before their first game on September 5.
The pressure mounts on Brown, offensive line coach Matt Mattox, and run game coordinator Mike Bloesch to enhance the offensive line's capabilities before the season kicks off. Brown cautioned that if the line's performance does not improve, the team will face significant challenges.
