The Houston Texans have added Chris Braswell, a former second-round draft selection of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to their practice squad. This decision is part of the Texans' strategy to strengthen their pass-rushing capabilities, especially in light of injuries affecting their defensive-end roster.

Braswell, who was picked 57th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft after a successful tenure at Alabama, was released by Tampa Bay during their final roster cuts on August 30, 2026. Over his two seasons with the Buccaneers, he participated in 34 games, achieving 48 tackles and 2.5 sacks, without securing a starting role.

The Texans view Braswell as a player with potential for development rather than an immediate starter. His final year at Alabama highlighted his skills, where he tallied eight sacks and ten tackles for loss, showcasing the talent that led to his initial selection in the draft.

In Houston, Braswell will not be expected to take on a starting role right away. Instead, he can concentrate on specific responsibilities such as edge-setting and quarterback pursuit, while seasoned players like Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter manage more complex tasks. His prior experience with Anderson at Alabama may facilitate his adjustment to the Texans' defensive scheme.

The Texans' roster features notable edge rushers, including Anderson, Hunter, and Jadeveon Clowney, but injuries have affected their depth. With players like Dylan Horton and Ali Gaye on reserve, Braswell's addition could provide essential support during the season. Overall, signing Chris Braswell presents a low-risk opportunity for the Texans to improve their defense while fostering player growth in a supportive setting.
