The Dallas Cowboys achieved a 17-7 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in their first preseason matchup, but the game was marred by a chest injury to running back Phil Mafah. Initially deemed questionable to return, Mafah was later confirmed to be out for the remainder of the game.
Fortunately, early assessments indicate that his injury may not be severe. Currently, Mafah ranks third on the Cowboys' depth chart, following Javonte Williams and Jaydon Blue. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer commented on Mafah's status, saying he had spoken with him and felt the team had come through with only minor issues.
In addition to Mafah, safety Justin Barron also faced a hit during the game. Schottenheimer mentioned that the team would evaluate all players further upon their return to Oxnard for treatment.
Mafah, selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, is competing for a position on the final roster after a difficult rookie year where he participated in just one game, achieving a total of 18 yards on five carries and scoring a touchdown.
Meanwhile, veteran running back Malik Davis made a strong showing against the Seahawks with 39 yards on seven carries, averaging 5.5 yards per attempt. As roster cuts approach, the Cowboys will continue to monitor player health, especially Mafah's condition, as they advance in the preseason.
