Florida State will take a 1-1 record into Saturday’s road game against No. 10 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where coach Mike Norvell said the Seminoles must handle a fast, explosive defense. He said Alabama has a larger defensive front than last season and that Florida State will need balanced offense, strong individual matchups and big plays.
Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell also presents a threat outside the pocket, Norvell said.
The Seminoles have lost two freshman linebackers, Izayia Williams and Daylen Green, for the rest of the season. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson is expected back during the year, but he will be sidelined for an extended stretch. Norvell said those absences may open opportunities on defense and special teams.
Florida State’s players were off Monday, and Norvell planned to address Michael Alford’s firing as athletic director with them Tuesday. Norvell praised Alford and his wife, Laura, and said preparations would continue with Bruce Warwick serving as interim athletic director. He called Warwick an experienced professional.
