The Houston Texans have brought George Odum up from the practice squad for their game against Cincinnati, marking his second elevation this season. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reported the move Sept. 19. Odum played 71% of Houston’s special teams snaps against Buffalo, making one tackle in the Texans’ 36-31 loss.
Odum is in his ninth NFL season. His previous teams include the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers, and he has received one All-Pro honor with each club. One report credited him with 205 career tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Other career figures listed 209 tackles, along with the same totals in the other categories. Those figures also included 12 starts in 109 games.
Caleb Bullock and Reed Blankenship are healthy, but Houston is using Odum for special teams. Coach DeMeco Ryans previously praised his playmaking during the preseason. Pro Football Focus placed Odum 26th among 29 Texans special teams players for the Buffalo game, while noting that its overall grade does not reflect performance in every phase.
Houston can elevate Odum one more time under the current arrangement. After Cincinnati, the Texans are scheduled to play the Colts in Week 3, potentially making that his final elevation before the team would have to place him on its 53-man roster or pursue another option.
