Council backs Sherman ISD's fourth bond-funded elementary on West Travis, with Dillingham slated to become a middle school

The City Council voted unanimously Monday for the district's planned school on West Travis Street. A district official told KXII the campus should open in fall 2028 and take students from Dillingham Elementary.

The City Council voted unanimously Monday in favor of Sherman ISD's plan to build a new elementary school on West Travis Street, KXII reported.

Brannon Kidd, the district's director of capital projects, told the station the campus is being paid for with the 2023 school bond and is the fourth of the four elementary schools that bond covered. He said design is roughly 90% finished and the district expects to open the school in fall 2028.

Where the students come from

The new campus will take in students who now attend Dillingham Elementary, Kidd told KXII, and the district is looking at renovating Dillingham to serve as a middle school. He said the district's elementary schools hold about 700 students each and that students will be moved between campuses to keep enrollment even.

"By the numbers we've been seeing, this is something that needs to be done, as well as some of our older schools that are almost at capacity," Kidd told KXII.

What the council had in front of it

The city's agenda packet for the Nov. 2 meeting listed a specific use permit to allow a school on 16.962 acres in the 2601 block of West Travis Street, land zoned C-1 for retail business. The Planning and Zoning Commission had recommended approval 6-0 on Sept. 22.

The district's filings describe a school for about 712 students, with a traffic study projecting close to 600 when it opens and full capacity around 2030. Drivers would reach it from West Travis, where turn lanes and a median opening are proposed, and from a new collector road with a separate bus driveway. The site plan shows 148 parking spaces.

A separate item on the same agenda would let the city size storm shelters at schools to the number of occupants a building is designed for, rather than the building code's larger count. The district had sought that change to hold down costs.

KXII's report did not say how the council handled that ordinance, and the city had not posted results or minutes from the meeting as of early Tuesday.
