Southern Methodist University (SMU) has announced the appointment of Derek Gossler as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This move is part of the university's strategy to boost its competitiveness in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) by enhancing revenue generation, a vital aspect of contemporary college sports.
Gossler arrives with a wealth of experience, having spent more than 15 years in areas such as fundraising, ticket sales, and commercial strategy. His most recent position was Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development and Chief Revenue Officer at the University of Wyoming, where he notably increased cash and pledges through the Cowboy Joe Club and achieved record ticket revenue.
Before his tenure at Wyoming, Gossler contributed to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he played a key role in securing five consecutive years of record fundraising. He also made significant impacts at Arizona State University, helping to raise $86 million during a major fundraising initiative and assisting in the establishment of the men's hockey program through considerable donor support.
Gossler's diverse background in various athletic departments equips him to meet SMU's demands as it operates within one of the most affluent and expansive markets in the country. His goal is to enhance revenue through innovative approaches while fostering connections with fans, supporters, and corporate partners.
With SMU's ongoing commitment to elevate its athletic programs nationally, Gossler's hiring reflects a dedication to sustaining revenue growth as the Mustangs transition into the ACC.
